Traditional Korean Sports

KBO 야구 문화 · Korean Baseball Culture
KBO — A Sports Experience Unlike Anywhere Else on Earth
Going to a KBO game is not just watching baseball — it's attending a full-scale live performance. Every batter has a personalized cheer song the entire stadium sings in unison. Professional cheerleaders lead synchronized dances on the dugout roof. Fans wave team-colored props, eat fried chicken and ramen, and continue cheering win or lose. Foreign visitors consistently describe it as the most fun they've ever had at a sporting event.
Stadium Food Culture
치맥
The soul food of KBO. Fried chicken paired with cold beer — delivered right to your seat by stadium vendors. The combination is so inseparable from baseball that 치맥 is practically synonymous with a KBO night. Vendors walk the aisles every half-inning; chicken arrives in boxes, beer in large plastic cups. Order early, watch the game, repeat.
Korean baseball stadiums serve instant noodles (라면) — hot, in a paper cup, eaten with chopsticks right in the stands. The combination of cold night air, a tight ballgame, and steaming broth is a quintessentially Korean experience that no overseas ballpark can replicate. On a cold April or October evening, stadium 라면 sells out fast.
Dried squid (오징어) and pressed filefish strips (쥐포) are iconic Korean ballpark snacks — grilled on flat presses at concession stands. The smell of roasting squid drifting through a stadium on a warm summer night is an unmistakable sensory memory for anyone who grew up going to KBO games. Served with 고추장 on the side.
Sajik Baseball Stadium in Busan — home of the Lotte Giants — has one of the most iconic traditions in all of Korean sports. Lotte fans fill orange plastic bags (주황색봉지) with air, seal them, and wave them in unison — creating a rippling sea of orange visible from every corner of the stadium. The orange bag is the symbol of Busan baseball spirit: loud, passionate, and impossible to forget.
KBO Cheerleaders
Not Sideline Decoration: They Are the MC of the Stadium
KBO cheerleaders stand on top of the home team's dugout roof and lead the entire stadium through every inning of every game. They are central, not peripheral. Each team's cheerleader squad has choreographed routines for every player's 응원가. When a batter walks to the plate, the cheerleader cues the crowd and thousands of fans begin singing and dancing in perfect sync. Successful KBO cheerleaders build their own celebrity following and cross over into TV and social media — the role is a legitimate professional performance career.
Unlike American baseball where staff stay on ground level, KBO cheerleaders perform elevated on the dugout roof — at home plate height, visible from every seat. This positioning makes them the visual anchor of the entire ballpark during a home half-inning. The PA system blasts the 응원가; the cheerleader leads the movement; the crowd follows.
Every player on the roster gets a unique 응원가 with its own choreography. Cheerleaders know all of them — switching instantly as each batter is announced. Fans know them too. Visiting a KBO game for the first time and watching 30,000 people spontaneously break into synchronized dance for a specific batter is a genuinely astonishing experience.
Hardcore KBO fans travel to away games with full gear: banners, thunder sticks, and their team's full 응원가 repertoire. When home and away cheer sections face each other in a KBO stadium — both singing simultaneously — the layered noise creates an atmosphere that rivals any sporting event in the world. 원정 응원단 members are treated as heroes by their clubs.
The Korean Bat Flip
Korea Made the Bat Flip an Art Form
In American baseball, a bat flip after a home run is considered disrespectful — "showing up" the pitcher. In KBO, the bat flip (빠던 — shortened from 빠따를 던지다, "to throw the bat") is celebrated as pure self-expression. Korean sluggers flip, twirl, and admire their bat with individual style after a big hit. When José Bautista's epic bat flip in the 2015 MLB playoffs became a worldwide viral moment, Korean fans smiled knowingly: "We've been doing this for decades."
Every KBO slugger develops a signature 빠던 — some spin the bat 180°, some let it drop with casual cool, some launch it high in celebration. Fans discuss and rank whose 빠던 is the most stylish. A dramatic walk-off 빠던 becomes a GIF shared across Korean social media for weeks. It is a form of personal brand as much as athletic celebration.
Foreign pitchers playing in the KBO occasionally take offense at bat flip culture — a culture clash that makes Korean sports headlines. The Korean view: the bat flip is celebration of the moment, not taunting of the pitcher. This is a fundamental cultural distinction. Understanding 빠던 means understanding that Korean baseball has a different emotional vocabulary than the American game.
MLB로 수출된 빠던
Korean-born MLB players brought their 빠던 habits to the major leagues, normalizing expressive bat celebrations. Today's bat flip culture in MLB — increasingly accepted and celebrated — owes something to the Korean standard that practiced it openly for decades before it was cool. KBO was ahead of the cultural curve by a generation.
KBO Player Cheer Songs
Every Batter Gets Their Own Song —
The KBO 응원가 system is unique in world sports: every player on the active roster has a personalized cheer song, composed specifically for them. When the batter's name is announced, tens of thousands of fans immediately begin singing from memory. New 응원가 are released before each season — teams hire professional composers for this. Some 응원가 become genuine hits listened to outside the stadium, even charting on Korean music platforms. The phenomenon has no direct equivalent anywhere else in professional sports.
