Check whether a connection problem concerns the network, an account or the game server before explaining it to staff.

At a PC방, ask 이용 시간은 어떻게 계산해요? to find out how session time is charged. A posted hourly rate and a prepaid package are different options.

프로 선수 is a professional player; 아마추어 is an amateur. Competition rules and employment terms depend on the league and contract, not the label alone.

팬 means fan and 응원하다 means cheer for someone. Ask 어느 팀 응원해요? rather than assuming all Korean viewers support the same team.

StarCraft

Blizzard, 1998

The game that created Korean esports. Released in 1998, StarCraft became a cultural phenomenon — a national sport. The strategic depth between Terran, Zerg, and Protoss at elite APM levels elevated it to a mind sport comparable to chess. OGN and MBC Game broadcast StarCraft 24/7 for over a decade. 스타리그 matches sold out arenas. Pro players had fan clubs, CF appearances, and action figures.

League of Legends

The current home of Korean esports dominance. Korean teams have won more World Championships than any other country. The LCK (League Champions Korea) is the world's most prestigious esports league. T1 with Faker is the most successful team in esports history. Korean training methods became the global standard — every region imports Korean coaches and players. (Korean server) is synonymous with the highest skill level on Earth.

KartRider (카트라이더)

Nexon, 2004

Korea's beloved mascot racer — often called the "Korean Mario Kart" but with deeper cultural roots in East Asia. The PC game of Korean elementary students throughout the 2000s, played endlessly in PC방 with friends. Its Korean-designed characters and drifting mechanics made it a cultural institution broadcast on OGN. (2023) relaunched the franchise globally. Its character 다오 is one of Korea's most recognizable game icons.

Fortress 2 Blue (포트리스 2 블루)

포트리스 2 블루 CCR, 2000

Korea's beloved artillery cult classic — a free-to-play turn-based multiplayer game where players aim cannon shots across terrain, calculating wind direction and gravity to destroy each other's tanks. In PC방 of the early 2000s, 포트리스 was the "in-between game" — played in 20-minute sessions between StarCraft matches. Its physics-based aiming system created fierce competition despite simple graphics, and its free-to-play model was a decade ahead of the industry. The concept predates Angry Birds by ten years. A classic of the 아포칼립스 era, it remains one of Korea's most nostalgic gaming memories.

Crazy Arcade BnB (크레이지아케이드 BnB)

BnB Nexon, 2001

Nexon's colorful bubble-shooting multiplayer — trap your opponents in bubbles before they trap you. BnB was Korea's great equalizer: the entry-point game for kids who found StarCraft overwhelming, for girls who were told "games aren't for you," and for anyone wanting quick fun in PC방. At its peak it had millions of concurrent Korean players. Its cheerful OST became meme material decades later, and the game's community-chat culture — mixing competition with friendship — was unlike anything else. It remains the gateway game of 2000s Korean childhood nostalgia.

Diablo II (디아블로 2)

2 Blizzard, 2000

Made in California, spiritually belonging to Korea. Diablo II was arguably more culturally embedded in Korean PC방 than anywhere else on Earth. The phrase "배틀넷 하러 가자" (let's go on Battle.net) was near-synonymous with Diablo II. Korean players pioneered the power-leveling and item-trading markets that predated modern gaming black economies. The 소서리스 (Sorceress) and 팔라딘 (Paladin) build debates were the subject of serious PC방 discussions. Its 2021 remaster Diablo II: Resurrected sold massively in Korea — 20 years of nostalgia had not faded in the slightest.

Ragnarok Online (라그나로크 온라인)

Gravity, 2002

The Korean MMORPG that conquered Southeast Asia. Gravity's Ragnarok Online — based on Lee Myung-Jin's (이명진) manhwa — brought bright 2D sprite aesthetics and European medieval fantasy to Korean online gaming, a distinct shift from Lineage's darker world. Its 공성전 (Castle Siege) guild-vs-guild PvP, where guilds fight to control castle ownership for economic bonuses, became a defining Korean game mechanic copied by dozens of successors. Ragnarok Online exported Korean gaming culture to the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, and Brazil — where it built active communities that persist to this day.

Sudden Attack (서든어택)

GameHi/Nexon, 2005

Korea's homegrown FPS powerhouse — at its peak, 서든어택 was played in more Korean PC방 than Counter-Strike. Developed by GameHi and published by Nexon, it offered a PC방-optimized Korean FPS experience: fast matchmaking, Korean-specific maps, and a 클랜 시스템 (clan system) with 명예 계급 (honor ranks) that created deep community loyalty. The game's distinctly Korean FPS culture — dramatic callouts, high-APM aim, clan tournaments at 오락실-style local events — shaped a generation of Korean FPS players. Though now largely retired, veterans of 서든어택 form a significant portion of Korea's professional FPS talent pipeline.

ACE · Air Force Esports
대한민국 공군 ACE

A real military unit where top pro gamers serve their mandatory service while continuing to compete. Korea's conscription law requires all men to serve — rather than losing stars for two years, the Air Force created a competitive gaming unit. 임요환 served here. The only military esports unit in the world.

Korea's Global Coaching Export

Almost every major LoL team in North America, Europe, and China employs Korean head coaches or analysts. Korean "bootcamps" — where international teams travel to Korea to train against the LCK — are standard competitive preparation. The KeSPA model (full-time coaches, psychologists, nutritionists, housing) has been copied worldwide.

What is a PC

PC방 (pi-ssi-bang) are internet cafés open 24 hours with high-spec gaming PCs, fast fiber internet, and full food service. Born from the 1997 IMF crisis — unemployed Koreans converted basements into gaming businesses just as StarCraft arrived. Prices: ₩1,000–1,500/hour. In Korea, PC방 is not just a place to game — it is where friendships are made, all-nighters are pulled, and professional careers begin.

Food Culture

PC방 음식

Most PC방 have full kitchen service. You order via a desktop menu system without leaving your seat. The smell of instant ramen mixed with PC hum is a core memory for Korean millennials. Some premium PC방 now serve proper meal sets.

(Private Booths)

일인실

Premium PC방 offer 1인실 — private enclosed booths with reclining chairs and personal AC. A trend from the 2010s driven by demand for privacy. Costs slightly more (₩1,500–2,000/hour). Some high-end PC방 feel closer to a luxury pod hotel than an internet café.

PC방 점수 시스템

PC방 점수

Many Korean games reward players who play from a registered PC방 with bonus XP, items, or event currency. This "PC방 advantage" means your account literally improves faster from PC방. Games like LoL and MapleStory integrate PC방 partnerships directly into their reward systems.

밤샘 PC방 문화

Missing the last subway (막차) means staying in PC방 until morning — a rite of passage for every Korean youth. PC방 are safe and open at 3 AM. Groups game, eat ramen, sleep in chairs, and emerge bleary-eyed at dawn. (I gamed all night) is said with both exhaustion and pride.

No More Counter Ordering

Modern PC방 are fully self-service via 키오스크 (kiosk) touchscreen terminals at the entrance. You select your seat, set your time, order food, and pay — all without speaking to staff. The old phrases "자리 있어요?", "한 시간 주세요", or "라면 시켜도 돼요?" are effectively extinct — everything is done on-screen. The staff's main job is now bringing food to your seat and cleaning up.

Gachi geimhalraeyo?
Do you want to game together?

Still human — asking a stranger next to you. Rare, but magic when it happens.

Irinsil isseoyo?
Are there private booths available?

Sometimes you still ask staff if private booths are free — not shown on kiosk.

고인물 literally means "stagnant water" — water that has been sitting so long it stops flowing. In gaming: someone who has played the same game for so many years they are deeply skilled but also deeply entrenched, unable to adapt or move on. Unlike 고수 (pure admiration), 고인물 has a faintly mocking edge — they've been here too long. "저 사람 완전 고인물이야" = "That person is a total veteran fossil."

배린이
Bae-ri-ni
PUBG newbie (배그 + 어린이)

The Korean internet loves this suffix pattern: 골린이 (golf newbie), 헬린이 (gym newbie), 주린이 (stock market newbie). Any hobbyist domain + 린이 = a beginner in that field. "나 배린이라 아직 치킨 못 먹었어" = "I'm a PUBG newbie, I still haven't won a chicken."

Bu-mo-nim an-bu
"How are your parents?" — extreme trash talk

Literally "greetings to your parents" — but in gaming, typing 부모님 안부 여쭤봐 after destroying someone is one of the most cutting insults possible. The subtext: "You played so badly I feel sorry for your parents." In Korean culture where parents are deeply respected, weaponizing them as trash talk hits harder than any direct insult. Guaranteed to cause rage. Use with caution.

현피
Hyeon-pi
Real-life fight after online conflict

현실 (reality) + PK (Player Kill). When an online argument escalates to "let's settle this IRL." 현피 뜨자 = "Let's meet up and fight for real." Born from the Lineage 혈맹 clan wars era where territorial disputes were so intense players actually tracked down opponents offline. Rare in modern gaming but the word remains — a testament to how seriously Koreans once took their online games.
