Read both sides of the order
| Role | Korean | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Barista | 어서 오세요. | Welcome. |
| You | 아메리카노 한 잔 주세요. | One Americano, please. |
| Barista | 따뜻한 걸로 드릴까요? | Would you like it hot? |
| You | 네, 따뜻한 걸로 주세요. | Yes, hot, please. |
| Barista | 드시고 가세요? | Will you have it here? |
| You | 아니요, 포장해 주세요. | No, to go, please. |
| Barista | 삼천 원입니다. | It’s 3,000 won. |
| You | 감사합니다. | Thank you. |
The number is chosen to practise reading a price. It is not a claim about what an Americano currently costs. Read the dialogue once for meaning, then cover the English column and explain each turn. Finally switch roles so the questions feel as familiar as your own order.
Build a request from pieces
A simple pattern is item + quantity + 주세요. 주세요 makes a polite request for something. With a drink, use the cup counter 잔: 커피 한 잔 주세요. To order two, change 한 to 두: 커피 두 잔 주세요. You can also point to a menu and say 이거 주세요. (“This one, please.”).
Change one piece at a time. Start with 아메리카노 한 잔 주세요, then replace 아메리카노 with 라테. Next change the quantity. This tells you whether you understand the pattern or have memorised only one sound sequence. Read the menu item as the café spells it; loanword spellings on menus can vary.
Prepare for questions, not only your opening line
| You might hear | What it asks | A useful reply |
|---|---|---|
| 따뜻한 걸로 드릴까요? | Hot? | 네, 따뜻한 걸로 주세요. |
| 아이스로 드릴까요? | Iced? | 네, 아이스로 주세요. |
| 드시고 가세요? | Having it here? | 네, 여기서 마실게요. |
| 포장이세요? | Takeaway? | 네, 포장해 주세요. |
여기서 means “here” as the location of an action. 마실게요 conveys what you will do: “I’ll drink it.” You do not need to master every ending before making an order, but understanding the intent makes the reply easier to adapt.
A spoken question may be shorter than the model, or phrased differently. If you hear 아이스 and are unsure of the rest, confirm what you want with 아이스로 주세요. If you did not catch the question at all, use 다시 말해 주세요 instead of guessing “yes.”
Useful limits and recovery phrases
천천히 말해 주세요. asks someone to speak slowly. 메뉴 좀 볼 수 있을까요? asks whether you can see the menu. 추천해 주세요. asks for a recommendation. These can keep the exchange moving while you decide.
우유 빼 주세요. requests that milk be left out. It does not explain a severe allergy or establish that a drink is safe from cross-contact. For a dietary requirement, ask about ingredients clearly and confirm with staff rather than treating one memorised phrase as enough information.
Many cafés use kiosks, apps, or order numbers. The same drink and quantity vocabulary helps you read the screen, but follow the café’s actual instructions for collecting your order. This guide teaches language, rather than a procedure guaranteed to work in every shop.
Choose a reply that fits
Try a new version
Order two iced Americanos to go. One model is 아이스 아메리카노 두 잔 주세요. 포장해 주세요. Now ask your partner to change the price and repeat it back. You are practising listening for meaning, so an unfamiliar number is a useful reason to ask for another repetition.
